The data catalog – The “Yellow pages” for business-relevant data.

An overview of data catalogs by BARC Analyst Timm Grosser, including tips on how to select the right data cataloging solution for your organization.

Data is essential for companies to keep up with the digital age. Everyone knows that by now. But it’s not so easy to extract the desired value from data and shine with innovative, data-driven business applications. Instead, we often see data chaos that has been growing for years in the form of fragmented data landscapes and distributed expert knowledge.

Smart Data Catalogs, A Must-Have for Data Leaders – Conference 2020

2020 conference Data Innovation Summit slides

The term “smart data catalog” has become a buzzword over the past few months. However, when referring to something being “smart” most people automatically think, and rightly so, of a data catalog with only Machine Learning capabilities.

We at Zeenea, do not believe that a smart data catalog is reduced to only having ML features!

In fact, there are my different ways to be “smart”.

This video focuses on the conference that Guillaume Bodet, co-founder and CEO of Zeenea, gave at the Data Innovation Summit 2020: “Smart Data Catalogs, A must-have for leaders”.

Data Sheet

It is a fact that data are a lever for growth and competitivity. They are perceived as strategic information that promotes innovation!

Drawing on this, enterprises are reorganizing themselves to adopt an approach called “data-driven.” No longer based on intuition or personal experiences, projects are guided by data. To become data-driven is a culture that is thought of and organized with processes and also with tools.

To achieve this objective, the data world is seeing the emergence of new tools that centralize these strategic assets.

We call it a Data Catalog.

What are the main usages for a data catalog?

In our previous data sheet, we gave the reasons why having a data catalog is essential to become data-driven. In our next PDF, we’d like to focus on a data catalog’s use cases: what are the main usages for a data catalog? To what demands does a data catalog answer to?

Based on various client interviews, we’ve identified six main usages for a data catalog:

  1. Search for datasets
  2. Understand a dataset
  3. Organize my metadata
  4. Trust datasets
  5. Discover my data
  6. Collaborate around data

Why does data culture matter?

Why does data culture matter?

Replay webinar

“Data culture” is a relatively new concept that is becoming essential to define when your organization wants to develop strategies through data.

If we take the example of the Web Giants, what distinguishes them is most certainly by having a strong and on-the-offense data culture in order to innovate successfully.

Regardless of whether that culture is decidedly controlled, completely open, or maybe something in between, your future data culture in your enterprise has to be defined, irrigating your organization day after day.

At Zeenea, we believe in a workplace environment that exercises a consistent approach to decision-making through emphatic and empirical data proof.

Through this 30 minute webinar, join Luc Legardeur and Dina Kim  in a discussion about:

  • What a data culture is, with examples of the different existing cultures while remaining within the semantic field of political systems (Data anarchy, Dara Data monarchy, Data Aristocracy, Democracy, Data).
  • A focus on data democracy and how it helps organizations produce value,
  • How Zeenea Data Catalog helps empower enterprises with the cultural evolution of data democracy.

How to leverage data assets with intelligent data catalogs

How to leverage data assets with intelligent data catalogs

How to leverage data assets
with intelligent data catalogs

2019 conference AI & Big data expo europe

Given at the AI & Big Data Expo Europe 2019 in Amsterdam last June, Guillaume Bodet (CEO of Zeenea) presented “How to leverage data assets with intelligent data catalogs” at the Big Data Business Solutions Track.

The new generation of intelligent data catalogs has stepped in, providing a means to pull data and curate them from a variety of sources in order to leverage assets. Powered by AI, they provide automated capabilities to show the true value of an enterprise’s data assets, connecting the business and technology sides of companies.

By exploiting AI & Machine Learning, intelligent data catalogs provide an in-depth understanding of data spread across the enterprise. We will answer the biggest questions:

  • How can analysts and business decision makers understand and enrich their documentation?
  • How do you make them trust these assets?
  • Who do they contact when they have questions?
  • How do they use data to make confident and informed decisions?

Lean data governance canvas

Zeenea’s Lean Data Governance Canvas is intended for Data Managers whose missions are to clarify and orchestrate data governance within their organizations.

From a methodological point of view, the Lean Data Governance Canvas is composed of two main parts:

  • The elements on the left that represent those of a governance system
  • The ones on the right that are inherent to an organization.

It is important to know that this Lean Data Governance Canvas is a toolkit for implementing data governance. The intervenors will have to iterate in order to conduct the LDGC to have the least number of assumptions as possible over time.

Data Sheet

Topics on data are still considered to be an extremely technical domain. However, data innovation is only possible if it is shared and understood by the large majority of people within your company.

And this with a data catalog!

In 2017, Gartner declared data catalogs as “the new black in data management and analytics”. Now, they have become a MUST-HAVE solution for data leaders 💡

According to the Gartner research report:

“Demand for data catalogs is soaring as organizations continue to struggle with finding, inventorying and analyzing vastly distributed and diverse data assets.*

In this report you will discover:

  • The purposes of a data catalog in an organization
  • The importance of centralizing data knowledge
  • How the increased focus on metadata and the implementation of a data catalog are key characteristics of agile data governance
  • What is a data catalog according to Zeenea
  • The features & benefits of Zeenea for your company

Why start an agile data governance?

Why start an agile data governance?

Why start an
agile data governance?

White paper

For the past few years, on the trails of GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, and Amazon), data is perceived as a crucial asset for enterprises.  This asset is enhanced by digital services and new uses that disrupt our daily lives and weaken more traditional businesses.

This transformation, whether we like it or not, concerns all structures and all sectors. Enterprises have understood that in order to face up to innovative startups and powerful web giants, they must capitalize on their data.  This awareness brings the great – likewise the small – enterprises to start a digital transformation to become what we call data-centric.

How does data democracy strengthen agile data governance?

How does data democracy strengthen agile data governance?

How does data democracy

strengthen agile data governance?

White paper

In this second edition, we decided to tackle the organization of this new, agile data governance, and its scaling process using this same mindset. We start by analyzing the different governing bodies that we come across in traditional organizations today.

The latter often takes on a defensive approach, usually inherited from Master Data Management or from larger initiatives for implementing information systems governance.
Very centralized, sometimes bureaucratic, they focus on data control and conformity, often resulting in limiting data access among all company employees. However, this dynamic is avoidable. The way web giants conform is quite frankly not that different from how more traditional organizations do – the security and conformity restraints to which they are subjected to require it.

However, data governing bodies carry out their role in a radically different manner. They are not guardians of the temple, but facilitators in an organization where data is a common strategic asset. It would appear that what distinguishes them is less so the form of governance than the culture which permeates it.

This culture has a name: Data Democracy!
